"The real subject of my photographs are the acrobats themselves and thus I try to show as little as possible of the background. I concentrate on framing the acrobat and the immediate space in which he moves. I am taking the photograph from the point of view of the acrobat and not of the spectator. From choice, the photographs are all vertical because acrobats play with gravity. I arrange the image within the rectangle, using the geometry of the acrobats' movements. I chose black and white photographs because I can isolate the acrobats' actions from the colours of a circus performance. Photography is not just reproducing reality but it is recreating it, by retranscribing it in two dimensions within a given rectangle.
Mr. Mi Lu had the initial idea of this album dedicated to Chinese acrobatic art as seen from a photographer from the West. He has accompanied many Chinese companies to Europe. I wish to thank him for having allowed me to pay homage through my photographs to Chinese acrobats."
